This study aims to determine the pedagogical role of teachers in identifying students’ interests and potentials at SMA Negeri 1 Rantau Selatan. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews and literature study. The informants in this study were two Civic Education teachers, namely Mrs. Marini Boru Siregar, S.Pd. and Mrs. Vida Nasution, S.Pd. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the pedagogical role of teachers is very important in recognizing students’ interests and potentials. Teachers identified students’ interests and potentials through observation during the learning process, direct communication, evaluation of learning outcomes, and students’ involvement in extracurricular activities. Students’ learning interests were reflected in their enthusiasm, activeness, and participation in learning activities, while their potentials were shown through consistent academic and non-academic abilities. Teachers also acted as guides, facilitators, and motivators in helping students develop their abilities. The study also found several obstacles, such as limited time, large numbers of students, and students’ lack of openness in showing their abilities. Therefore, improving teachers’ pedagogical competence and school support is necessary to optimize the process of identifying and developing students’ potentials.
