Generative AI Policy
Jurnal Penelitian dan Evaluasi Pendidikan Indonesia recognizes the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in academic research and scholarly publishing. To maintain academic integrity, research transparency, originality, and the reliability of published work, the journal establishes the following policy governing the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies by authors, editors, and reviewers.
1. Authors
Authors are prohibited from using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to generate, rewrite, paraphrase, translate, or substantially modify the content of manuscripts submitted to the journal. Manuscripts must reflect the authors' own scholarly work, critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation.
Authors must not use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to fabricate, manipulate, or falsify research data, research findings, citations, references, or other scholarly information. AI-generated citations and references must not be included unless their existence and accuracy have been independently verified.
Authors are also prohibited from using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to create, alter, enhance, obscure, remove, or introduce elements into figures, images, photographs, illustrations, or other visual materials submitted with a manuscript, unless such technologies constitute an integral part of the research design or methodology and their use is explicitly described.
Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, validity, integrity, and scholarly content of their manuscripts. Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility or accountability for scholarly work.
When the use of AI is permitted as part of the research methodology, authors must disclose its use transparently and provide sufficient information to explain its role in the research. All AI-generated outputs must be critically reviewed and verified by the human authors before submission.
2. Editors
Editors are prohibited from using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to evaluate, summarize, rewrite, modify, or generate assessments of submitted manuscripts as a substitute for their own professional judgment and editorial decision-making.
Editors must evaluate manuscripts independently and make editorial decisions based on the journal's editorial policies, publication ethics, scholarly standards, the relevance of the manuscripts to the journal's scope, and recommendations from qualified reviewers.
Editors must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and all editorial materials. Manuscript content, author information, reviewer reports, research data, and other confidential materials must not be uploaded, copied, or disclosed to generative AI or AI-assisted platforms that lack appropriate authorization and confidentiality safeguards.
Editors are responsible for ensuring that editorial decisions are made through independent human judgment and in accordance with the principles of fairness, confidentiality, objectivity, and academic integrity.
3. Reviewers
Reviewers are prohibited from using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to evaluate, summarize, analyze, rewrite, or generate review comments and recommendations as a substitute for their own expert assessment of submitted manuscripts.
Peer review must be conducted independently by the appointed reviewers. Reviewers are expected to provide their own professional assessment of the manuscript's originality, methodological rigor, validity, significance, scholarly quality, and relevance to the journal's scope.
Reviewers must not upload or disclose submitted manuscripts, supplementary materials, figures, research data, review reports, or any confidential information obtained during the peer-review process to generative AI or AI-assisted platforms that lack appropriate authorization and confidentiality safeguards.
Reviewers remain fully responsible for the accuracy, objectivity, fairness, confidentiality, and scholarly integrity of their evaluations. All comments and recommendations submitted to the editor must reflect the reviewers' own professional judgment.
4. Exceptions for Research Purposes
The restrictions in this policy do not apply when generative AI or AI-assisted technologies constitute an essential or clearly defined component of the research design, methodology, data collection, data generation, data processing, or data analysis.
For example, AI may be used as a research instrument, an object of investigation, a component of an educational intervention, or a tool for analyzing research data, provided that its use is scientifically justified and transparently reported.
In such cases, authors must describe the use of AI in the appropriate section of the manuscript, particularly the Methods section. Where applicable, the description should include:
- The name of the AI tool, system, or model used.
- The version and the developer or provider of the technology.
- The purpose and specific role of the technology in the research.
- The procedures, prompts, parameters, or settings necessary to understand and reproduce its use.
- The methods used to verify the accuracy, reliability, and validity of AI-generated outputs.
Authors must clearly disclose the use of AI in the research and explain its contribution to the study. The disclosure should be included in the Methods section or another appropriate section of the manuscript, depending on the nature of the research.
The use of AI as part of a research methodology does not exempt authors from responsibility for the accuracy, validity, originality, and integrity of the research or its reported findings. Authors remain accountable for all aspects of their submitted work.
